Alternate Guitar Tuning: EACGBE

-This guitar tuning is basically the 4th string tuned down a whole step.


-This tuning helps you get a Jazzy sound out of your guitar with the regular shapes.





Comparison with Standard Tuning shapes.




Bar Chords:


For the basic chords that we always play.








I) Root on 6th string:




                                          becomes
Standard tuning shape --------------------------> in EACGBE tuning


1)Major Chord     --------------------------> 7 Chord


ex. Amaj (5th fret) --------------------------> A7




2)Minor chord --------------------------> m7 Chord


ex. Amin (5th Fret) --------------------------> Amin7 






II)Root on 5th string:



1)Major Chord --------------------------> maj6 Chord


ex. Cmaj(3rd fret) --------------------------> C maj6




2)Minor Chord --------------------------> m6 Chord


ex. Cmin(3rd fret) --------------------------> Cmin6










This means that our 




open D shape becomes D6
open Dmin becomes Dmin6




Open Gmajor becomes Gadd4 (G major with an added 4th)


Open Cmajor becomes Cadd2 (C major with an added 2nd)


F major is a bar chord , with root on 6th string ,so it becomes F7






Effect on the minor Pentatonic scale:




This tuning has a very strange effect on the pentatonic scale


As, the minor 7th gets replaced by the minor 6th
Or sometimes the fifth gets replaced by the fourth.
Or the root gets replaced by the minor 7th
Or the 2nd gets replaced by the root, and so on.


It sounds strange because
 this happens on only the first octave of the pattern and doesn't happen in the second octave, i.e on strings 3,2,1.
